Responsible Gambling
Guidance to help you stay in control. If gambling stops being fun, support is available in New Zealand.
Play within your limits
- Set a budget: choose a fixed amount you can afford to lose; never use money meant for rent, bills, or food.
- Set time limits: plan start/stop times and take regular breaks.
- Avoid chasing losses: losses are part of gambling; increasing stakes to “win it back” can escalate harm.
- Keep it balanced: protect sleep, work/study, and relationships; don’t gamble when stressed, upset, or using alcohol/drugs.
- Know the odds: games are designed so the house can have an advantage over time.
Controls (spend & time)
Where available, use operator tools such as deposit limits, spending/loss limits, session/time limits, reality checks, and activity statements. If tools aren’t available, consider banking controls (e.g., separate account/card) and keep personal limits written down.
Timeouts & self-exclusion
A timeout (cooling-off) is a short break; self-exclusion blocks access for a longer period. If you use a gambling service, check its responsible gambling area or contact its support team to request a timeout/self-exclusion.
